Caves and Crazy Rocks — Cederberg

The Cederberg is a place shaped more by time than by people.
Remote, elemental, and uncompromising, it feels less like a landscape and more like a geological memory.

Caves and Crazy Rocks is an immersive film photography experience set within the Cederberg wilderness—one of Southern Africa’s most distinctive and least altered environments. Presented by Craig Fouché and Sven Jurgensen, this workshop invites photographers into a terrain where scale, texture, and imagination converge.

This is a remote world of otherworldly rock formations, sculpted into arches, towers, caves, and improbable balances by wind and water over millions of years. Shapes suggest faces, animals, and architecture that never existed—compositions waiting patiently for those willing to slow down and look. The terrain rewards curiosity and quiet observation rather than speed. Once home to the Khoi-san people, rock art paintings abound, telling stories of life, hunts, elephants and game.

The Cederberg is also home to the elusive Cape Leopard, a reminder that this is not a curated landscape, but a living one. By night, the skies open completely—dark, vast, and uninterrupted—offering exceptional conditions for star-filled compositions that echo the permanence of the land below.

The workshop is offered twice yearly, in Spring and Autumn, when light, temperature, and atmosphere are at their most forgiving. These seasons allow for long days of exploration and calm evenings where the land reveals its subtler tones.

Participants work with 1920s-era cameras, medium format, and large format film systems, provided where required. One-on-one guidance is given throughout, supporting each photographer’s way of seeing and working. Film stocks are selected in advance and allocated to your account, with development, high-resolution scanning, and optional fine printing handled with precision and care.

Accommodation is chosen for its remoteness and simplicity, allowing the experience to remain focused on observation, stillness, and the act of making photographs without interruption.
