Light Without a Lens — Western Cape

There is a different way of seeing.

Long before precision optics and perfect sharpness, there was only light, time, and a small opening through which the world quietly revealed itself.

Light Without a Lens is an intimate photographic immersion set amongst the mountains, coastlines, forests, and open landscapes of the Western Cape. Presented by Craig Fouché and Sven Jurgensen, this workshop returns photography to its most essential form. No lenses. No electronics. No viewfinder separating you from the scene. Just a handmade camera, a single sheet of film, and patience.

This is photography reduced to its purest expression.

Participants work exclusively with handcrafted large format pinhole cameras, embracing a slower process where each exposure becomes an act of observation rather than reaction. Light is measured with care. Composition is imagined rather than previewed. Time itself becomes part of every photograph, recording movement, atmosphere, and stillness in equal measure.

You will receive one-on-one guidance throughout the workshop, tailored to your pace and experience. Whether you are discovering analogue photography for the first time or seeking a deeper understanding of the medium, each session is shaped around your own creative process. Film stock is selected in advance and allocated to your account with careful consideration given to subject, season, and intention.

Each workshop explores a carefully chosen location within the Western Cape, where changing weather, ancient landscapes, and quiet spaces provide endless opportunities for contemplative image making. Mountains, fynbos, coastline, abandoned structures, and open skies become subjects not to capture, but to experience.

Simply arrive. Join us.
We take care of the rest.

Pinhole cameras, film stocks, development, high-resolution drum scanning, and optional fine printing are all handled with precision and care. Every camera is provided, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the experience without the need for specialised equipment.

This is not a camera workshop.
It is not about technical perfection.
It is an invitation to rediscover photography through simplicity, patience, and light.

No AI.
No automation.
One opening. One exposure. Permanently real.

Light Without a Lens — Western Cape is for those who understand that photography is not defined by the sophistication of the camera, but by the intention of the person standing behind it.
